Description
Nalbana Bird Sanctuary, also known as Nalbana Island, forms the core area of the Ramsar-designated wetlands of Chilika Lake. During the migratory season, the heart of the park becomes a haven for thousands of birds. The island vanishes beneath the water during the monsoon season, only to reappear post-monsoon. Large flocks of greater flamingos, migrating from Iran and the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, feed in the lake’s shallow waters. Other long-legged waders, such as lesser flamingos, Goliath herons, grey herons, purple herons, egrets, spoonbills, storks, and black-headed ibis, can also be seen around Nalbana Island. The sanctuary is home to many bird species, including some rare ones.
